Welcome to episode 24 of the Suite Nature Cruise Cast. Hi, I'm Linz. As always, I'm joined by Marky, hello, hello. And today we're talking themed cruises. And what theme would get us on board? But first a little mood music.

Mark:

I like that one. I thought I'd start off the new year in style. Is that you glugging wine now? What's your thoughts?

Linzi:

It was like a cross between the good, the bad and Ugly.

Mark:

Okay.

Linzi:

And who was that Whittaker guy that used to whistle?

Mark:

He was a bit like that.

Linzi:

And yeah.

Mark:

Shall, I keep looking.

Linzi:

I don't know if that actually the mood is not theme. Well, I guess it's theme, it was theme because he would count a cowboy.

Mark:

It was definitely a theme Now, to be fair.

Linzi:

Is there a cowboy cruise?

Mark:

I've not found a cowboy cruise, but we'll try.

Linzi:

You actually caught cruising on a breeze though I think it was a different type of cruising.

Mark:

It was definitely a cowboy cruise in that one. Anyway, we shall keep looking. The search continues. Well, as you said, today we're talking about themed cruises. Yes, I'm really excited about this because it's something we started talking about the other day when we were just sat here not here over there, over there, um, and we were like that's a good idea for the podcast, let's stop talking. Which we didn't, we carried on no, we didn't, we stopped talking no only that, we were going to do it for today and I I got.

Mark:

I started checking down the back of the sofa to see if I could find any any extra money for a book, said theme cruise yeah, I mean I don't want to get into all the pros and cons at this point, but when we're sort of looking at themed cruises, they're pretty expensive yes, they are very, they are quite pricey I mean, let's talk about that first of all, okay, before we get, because what I thought we'd do if it's okay with you, yeah is we'll talk about some pros and cons for it, okay. But then of course, obviously we have our cruise news at the end as well.

Linzi:

Okay.

Mark:

And no cruise confession today. Back next episode. Okay, but I thought what we'd then do is talk about some specific ones.

Linzi:

Okay.

Mark:

And what our thoughts are on those ones.

Linzi:

And whether we'd do it.

Mark:

Whether we'd do them, okay, and what our thoughts are on those ones, on whether we do it, whether we do them and whether it's interesting to anyone watching slash listening, okay, but let's start with pros and cons. Mm-hmm, because let's start with cost. If you compare going on whatever cruise ship you're on, yes, normally, to when it's a themed cruise, yes, is there a difference then? There is, there is definitely a theme supplement for going on a themed cruise, and it's not small, is it?

Linzi:

It's not small, but you are getting all the theming and if it's, you know whether it's you're meeting someone from a TV show or film or whether there's equipment involved, because it's crafting.

Mark:

I think there's definitely more cost involved for the people putting them on than a standard cruise, obviously because they've got the normal cruise plus that.

Linzi:

Activities yeah.

Mark:

They tend to have all their own staff on there as well as the cruise ship Events. Yes, yeah, they tend to put their own entertainment on over and above what the cruise line would normally do, so they've got the costs of that. But I also think that different themed cruises well, I'll reword that not all themed cruises are equal no, you can go on some and they literally redecorate things like Royal Caribbean's main promenade. Yes, and they change all the shop signage and the names.

Linzi:

Shall we take a drink every time we say theme.

Mark:

That's very dangerous, but let's start doing that.

Linzi:

Theme. You can't just say theme, just so you can have a drink. I think you'll find a can.

Mark:

Okay, maybe we'll stop playing this and just carry on drinking um, but yeah, as I. When you go on someone's where they completely redecorate the ship, they don't just pop a couple of trimmings, they change signage. No, then they expect to pay a lot more for that. So, and also, there could be a lot of cleaning involved?

Linzi:

okay, well, I'm sure there's a lot more for that. So, and also there could be a lot of cleaning involved okay.

Mark:

Well, I'm sure there's a lot of cleaning on cruise ships anyway no, I mean certainly on certain ones extra, like extra cleaning I'm sure there's three ones in particular that we might talk about, where extra cleanings required over and above what they would do normally, but we will come back to that later on. Stay tuned for the clean, the cleaning themed cruise um it's not like a cleaning theme it's just more cleaning on those cruises um so a lot more expensive and it's not just a couple of hundred dollars, a couple of thousands.

Mark:

You can easily pay double and sometimes treble yes, what your normal cruise line price would be, yes, so that's the first thing to think about, that when you're going on, that it's going to be a lot more. But if you're going to something like Comic-Con on land, it's expensive to get in there and it's expensive to do stuff in there. So why would you not expect, when they do Comic-Con, the cruise which is a real thing?

Linzi:

I know I saw it was in February.

Mark:

Then you're going to pay a lot more to go to that as well. Yeah, the second thing to really sort of bear in mind is that there's not really for the bigger ones, there's not really a thing as a last minute bargain.

Linzi:

No, because I've had a look at, for example, the Star Trek cruise that goes out in February, back end of February.

Mark:

So at the time we're recording a couple of months.

Linzi:

Well, it's not long, is it? No, not at all and there are a few rooms available, but even there's no availability. They are the prices, are the prices, and I think it was it three and a half thousand dollars per person for inside no, an ocean view. All the inside. Inside had sold out. It was pretty much sold out.

Mark:

There was only a couple of rooms yeah, and that's what I'll get into in terms of that. Expect them to sell out very quickly.

Linzi:

The popular ones sell out in days well, I saw that there was another cruise. Can we start talking about the cruise? Isn't that sold out? We can in a minute I just want to cover the pros and cons on it okay, you do your pros and cons, we'll get on to the ones you want to talk about? Do them, do them.

Mark:

But the other side of them selling out quick is expect them to be really busy when you're on board.

Linzi:

Is that a pro or a?

Mark:

con. No, it's a con, is it? These are all cons that I'm talking about. At the moment they're going to be running at full occupancy, basically.

Linzi:

Yeah, but I wouldn't be worried by that.

Mark:

No, buy that. No, but you're not going to find that it's quiet. But what I mean by that is that expect to queue for stuff, expect longer lines.

Mark:

You are going to be on a ship that's running at capacity yeah um, and we know a lot of people like to cruise outside of things like the school holidays because they're a bit quieter then, yes, these ones are not quiet whenever they run. No um and the other. It is a con technically, I guess, but some for them it might be a pro. The ships tend to be the older ones that they use, not always no. You do find that the really big events, you'll find them on the Celebrity Edge class ships. You'll find them on Royal Caribbean's Oasis.

Linzi:

The one I've got my eye on is on the Oasis class.

Mark:

You'll find them on Virgin Voyages ships. So you do find them on Virgin Voyages ships? Yes, so you do find them on that. The smaller themed cruises. So if you were going on, for instance, a strictly come dancing cruise, oh, Dancing with the Stars. Or Dancing with the Stars. In the US they tend to be on a smaller ship than the older ones, I guess, but again, that's not always.

Linzi:

No, people might like that the pros?

Mark:

Okay, give me your pros. You're going to have unique activities on the ship that you're not going?

Linzi:

to find you certainly are.

Mark:

Those three ones in particular are getting all flush.

Linzi:

I'm getting my coaster out.

Mark:

You might need a fan.

Linzi:

I'm going to keep the coaster. I feel this is very coaster heavy.

Mark:

So you've got unique activities that you're not going to find on any other cruise ship. Of those, hence the cleaning hence the cleaning, but also not just those.

Mark:

You're more likely, I would have thought, to get on with people on board oh, because they share a hobby and interest with you if you're going on there in particular as a solo or even as a couple or a group of people again going back to your three ones you know that you've got something in common with someone who's on there, so it'll make it easier to strike up conversation. Don't mean you're getting on with everyone, but I would guess statistically, you're more likely to get on with people. You're getting ahead of the story on this one, I think a bit too much.

Linzi:

It's not a story, it's the truth.

Mark:

Well, that's the stories that we're telling, and you get a chance to meet your screen or your TV or your music heroes, things like that as well.

Linzi:

Oh, you do, I'm having more wine.

Mark:

Get in there. So shall we talk about some specific cruises? Yes, do um. So shall we talk about some specific cruises? Yes, because do you want?

Linzi:

some more wine.

Mark:

Well, I've not drank as much as you yet, but if you pour in it, I'll have it before you finish the bottle because I need this for this activity. We I feel that we should just get you one of those glasses that attaches directly to the bottle at this stage, oh, I'm a lady, I finish it quick.

Linzi:

Okay, hit me.

Mark:

So we'll start off with sort of the normal-ish Normal We'll get through to.

Linzi:

I don't think there is a normal one. No, there's definitely levels, as you will see, as we're going along.

Mark:

Because for some people they're Okay. What would some people in?

Linzi:

classes like not normal is everyday normal.

Mark:

There's ones that will appeal to a wider market.

Linzi:

There is no normal no.

Mark:

But there's ones that will appeal to more people than the other ones. I disagree. You touched on first the Star Trek cruise.

Linzi:

Yes.

Mark:

So they've been running for quite a long time.

Linzi:

Yes, and it's very popular. I lost count of the things and the people that were on it, but I like the idea of the parties getting dressed up. There's more dressing up than there is on Cunard.

Mark:

Oh way more. I mean, that is probably one of the things for us to touch on quickly before we get into each one of these, like the Star Trek ones, because you've just sort of reminded me of it okay some people might think when we're talking themed cruises, yeah, about themed nights on things like q and a, where you got masquerade or scarlet night or virgin or the white night on a thousand different cruise lines what did you say on virgin?

Mark:

scarlet night. Oh yes, I've done that, so you have. You've done all of the ones that I just mentioned uh, which is why I mentioned them, because we've done them, so they're in my head. They sort of happen on most ships, and you do have uh things like river cruises where they'll have like a classical music themed cruise, okay, but everything else is still the same as normal. That isn't what we're talking about within here oh, like the food and drink one.

Mark:

They don't you know, so they'll have it where they've got some elevated options for food on certain ones, although I've, like michelle rude jr nice um coming on and doing cooking demonstrations yeah, all the comedy crews on virgin comedy crews. I would class as a themed cruise.

Mark:

We'll come back as to why I would class that, so you just it's a lot more than just the theme nights is what we're talking about on this one, so the Star Trek one we were touching on there, they even theme what they call it and make that in line with the movies. So you know, like Star Trek 5, Star Trek 6. So even that, I think they're on the Star Trek Cruise 8 or 6 or something. He definitely had a V and some numbers after it.

Linzi:

I love a V.

Mark:

And they get many of the sort of really big celebrities from. There you know, william shatner, patrick stewart, jonathan freaks, all of the main cast. Yeah, that's probably one of the most expensive now yes, but we talked about that it is, but you get that value for money yeah I don't feel that we really need to talk a lot about the Star Trek one, because I think that people can imagine We've talked about it. We've talked about it Imagine what that is. But there is also a scrapbooking and crafting themed cruise.

Linzi:

That's not me. You'll get me on the Star Trek one, but the crafting one with the knitting or the scrapbooking.

Mark:

Not really your bag.

Linzi:

That's not me.

Mark:

That's not me well, what about one um that's called puzzled about everything?

Linzi:

it depends what it is, this as in just life in general, or puzzles puzzles what type of puzzles are we talking?

Mark:

uh, everything from speed jigsaws, speed escape rooms and those ones, for instance, they do on things like so and out of the season odyssey, wow.

Linzi:

No, so that would suggest they're really popular. That doesn't. No, that's not me.

Mark:

What about when I tell you that one of those ones is a 16-night Panama cruise, that?

Linzi:

sounds fabulous, but I'd be very puzzled on the puzzled cruise.

Mark:

You don't feel that's your bag.

Linzi:

That's not me. That's not me. Give me another one.

Mark:

Okay, how about Chris Jericho's rock and wrestling rage at sea? Now you know who Chris Jericho is. Don't pretend that you don't. Who's Chris Jericho?

Linzi:

Is he not a WWE person?

Mark:

He was. He's now an AWE.

Linzi:

Okay, aew, I think he'll forgive me. He will, but he was Okay okay, so I know who he is. Do you learn wrestling? Yes, but he was Okay okay, so I know who he is, so you can go on. Do you learn the wrestling?

Mark:

Yes.

Linzi:

No, I'm not doing that, you don't have to learn the wrestling.

Mark:

Now that's a rock and wrestling. So they mix up a rock festival and a wrestling one. You can go have Wrestle with the big wrestlers and the teacher wrestler moves and you get to check your insurance as to whether you're covered, because you might find that it's not covered for wrestling would you need to get like specialists?

Linzi:

you know, like if you, if you do like off-piste skiing or something like that, is that the type of like out, really heavy duty outdoor pursuits like? Like I've looked like rock climbing.

Mark:

Yeah, when we do this for yourself no, but I have looked when we've done the insurance before because we get the cruise cover. So if you miss sports and stuff like that um, and I've seen it where it talks about extreme sports, but it's talking about sort of bungee jumping. It talks about, uh, things like surfboarding yeah, you're not good. Yeah, I've never seen it mentioned. Wrestling wrestling a professional wrestler, I'm gonna say not covered, but double check before you do that.

Linzi:

But they also do things like on the pool deck.

Mark:

They put big rings up there and do live matches.

Linzi:

Oh, wow, I mean, it's not me, but you would love that.

Mark:

I think you'd like the whole crew Bear in mind. It's like 50% rock festival, 50% wrestling. Standing up on the top deck looking over onto the pool pool deck, watching the wrestling and drinking cocktails sounds very good. I'll help them oil up uh, but on that one as well.

Linzi:

They do things like comedy shows and okay, okay, okay um we I know I've picked mine, I know what I'm doing for mine okay.

Mark:

Well, let's talk about some sort of less mainstream, mainstream ones. Good word, thank you. How about the gothic cruise?

Linzi:

now in a similar way to the do the Gothic Festival in Whitby.

Mark:

Yeah, so it's people getting dressed up in the goth gear. You'll have things like vampire stuff. You'll have concerts and events that are going on on there around that theme oh, could I wear a corset? Yes.

Linzi:

Wow Okay.

Mark:

Okay, I've not looked into this, but I'm saying, yes, you could Anything that fits that sort of look on there. Okay, so the Gothic cruise that's next. One of those is on Norwegian Getaway, but to fit into it, and again, for me the thing cruising should be about the itinerary as well.

Linzi:

Yeah.

Mark:

That one goes in and out of New Orleans.

Linzi:

Wow, home Vampires love New Orleans. Vampire Central I'm not going to say Central, but vampires do Where's Vampire Central?

Mark:

You can't say Transylvania, because there's only Dracula from there.

Linzi:

You know what we went to see? Nosferatu, didn't we the other day?

Mark:

That was disappointing.

Linzi:

And then I was so disappointed by the passion I had to watch Bram Stoker with Gary Oldman and Keanu, and Keanu and Winona oh my god he.

Mark:

Oh my god, gary, in that my goodness so I can't promise Gary Oldman as Dracula on the gothic cruise. But that, do you think that one's of any interest? Once you could you see yourself going on that, because neither of us you would say I've got a goth, look.

Linzi:

No, but we but no, but we are interested in vampires. No, but now I'm thinking I just love Gary, okay continue.

Mark:

We'll carry on with the sort of non-mainstream ones. Okay, give me another. We're the golden fans at sea.

Linzi:

Is this Golden Girls? It's the Golden Girls. You know what I bet this is?

Mark:

hilarious. So on that one, that one is on again slightly newer ship on celebrity reflection.

Linzi:

That does surprise me, we fancy going on.

Mark:

Yeah, we do yeah, we've never done that one um, and it's doing like grand cayman and stuff okay, okay, yeah um, but on that one they have costume dress parties. Wow, where obviously can you be blanche? I could definitely be blanche, you could definitely you are so blanche I could carry blanche um. So on the thingy. It says make sure you pack a caftan or two and prepare to eat a lot of cheesecake.

Linzi:

Oh, I'd better check out Joe Brown's caftans.

Mark:

But he does parodies and shows and all sorts of things. I think that one sounds a fun one, it sounds fun. This one I wouldn't necessarily class as not mainstream because we know people are going on this one. Classes not mainstream because we know people going on this one.

Linzi:

Um, you worried as to which I'm gonna say it now, but the comedy fest on virgin, because you touched on it earlier. Yeah, we do. We do know people that love that and been on it and booked again yeah, they've just had it um in 2024.

Mark:

It's coming up again in august this year. I think they only do it out of the uk. I'm not aware they do it no, no elsewhere. No, so it's on portsmouth at the end of august. I want to say yes yeah um, and it's a six night one yeah so it'll be good on there, but that's where they bring really big comedians on board. The shows change, for while that's going on as well, you've still got things like scarlet night as well but it is very much around that side of it.

Mark:

Um, actually, no, there is, because I've just seen my notes um a five night comedy festival going on valiant out of the us.

Linzi:

Okay, so you can do it in the us wow, in august.

Mark:

So they are doing it. So they've expanded on that because obviously they were very, very popular. We've then got a couple of less mainstream ones, and I'm going to start off so from do we need to put a warning out for this? No, because we'll be discreet in terms of what we're talking. Okay, let's be discreet. I'm having a drink first, so the first one is the big nude book now, you would like that I'd do that.

Linzi:

I can't do that, but you would like that well, that's because you you'd get sunburn in places.

Mark:

I've never seen the sun.

Linzi:

Oh, can you imagine the amount of sun, how long it'd take me to sun lather up for that.

Mark:

It's bad enough you getting sun lathered up when you've got your bikini on.

Linzi:

It's like a process.

Mark:

Let alone oh. I couldn't, that's you that have never seen the sun.

Linzi:

There is parts me that have never seen the sun so have you, as all of you, seen the sun? Yeah, I, all of me's never seen the sun.

Mark:

I've had when we've been where there's been an outdoor shower, when I've stayed in certain places I've had outdoor. I've not done that.

Linzi:

That's because you moaned, it was too cold no, but I'm not an outdoor in the sun fun person now it's worth specifically sort of noting on these ones, because this is a cleaning one. This is one. You need the heavy duty.

Mark:

There'll be a lot of suntan cream everywhere, but this isn't Sexual. Sexual it's not a swingers cruise. No, they make it very clear on the thing that this is just about people who who enjoy, the who prefer to walk around naked.

Linzi:

Yeah, you'd be naked now if you could no, it's cold at the moment.

Mark:

It's a bit chilly. It won't be flattering but they also again pulling in the itinerary on there and it makes sense they pull in only at the ports where they've got access to nude beaches okay I'm sorry, I was on a different cruise then well, the next cruise here we go.

Mark:

In fact, there's two cruises here we go these are definitely the two best known ones, so there's best known of the ones that are like this. I'm sure there are more but one called temptation have you seen my hair? My hair's starting to curl Get out my coaster, and the other one is called.

Linzi:

Bliss, is it bliss?

Mark:

Well, there is bliss and desire, so there's quite a few isn't there. And I'm sure there's more than that.

Linzi:

And these are ones where you make new friends.

Mark:

Close friends.

Linzi:

Make new close, personal, intimate friends.

Mark:

Yeah.

Linzi:

And then you shake hands and you say, well, that wasn't nice. And then and then you go for something to eat or the other way around no, you wouldn't do it like I.

Mark:

I wouldn't you want a full tummy. Would you want to be flattering? You don't want to have any food.

Linzi:

I'd want to have a sleep. But let's face it, that ain't me. I'm not wired that way. No, you'd have a fabulous time. I'm not wired that way. I think we all know what I mean. You, you could, you could go on it and be fine. That's what I'm saying you'd be less fine.

Mark:

We've talked a little bit in terms of the sort of more sexy side of what they're doing on there, but they also do have a lot of like themed stuff going on as well. It's not just about.

Linzi:

No, there's outfits. There's outfits you need to take outfits we we've seen. I'd love the outfits. My we've seen the youtube videos we watched quite a lot of videos and we ended up going down a rabbit hole on this one day not a literal one rabbit hole. Maybe not the best term, but we we also watched the Atlantis cruise. Again, that's something you could deal with, not me.

Mark:

I don't feel that I fully qualify for the Atlantis cruise.

Linzi:

I think you qualify for it more than I do.

Mark:

Well, yeah, in that I'm a man, so, given that it's a men's cruise, I think ladies do go on it.

Linzi:

I again would need my coaster.

Mark:

Well, I would say, from the video we watched on the Atlantis, one which I don't know do they advertise it as an LGBTQ plus? Yes, they do.

Linzi:

Yeah, because I'm a plus. I'm a plus you can be a plus. I'm definitely a plus you are, but I know.

Mark:

But the Atlantis one. If you've never seen any of these, I would recommend going on a YouTube search as opposed to just a generic Google search.

Linzi:

Get yourself a drink. Get yourself a drink, you're going to need it. Well, the YouTube ones are still restricted by what you can show on YouTube. Of course they are.

Mark:

If you go search just generic on the net, you might find it a little bit stronger, the only way.

Linzi:

I mean I'd be very I'm not a pearl clasper that might be a long term phrase.

Mark:

I think some of those cruises people are what are the odds of pearl clasper? You know?

Linzi:

a clutcher. I mean oh my oh.

Mark:

I mean a pearl clasper.

Linzi:

I think pearl clasper might be a different thing altogether. Please don't Google that I'm definitely not going to Google that, don't Google that Don't Google.

Mark:

What's a pearl clasper at work? We do not know.

Linzi:

We cannot.

Mark:

But I'm not recommending that. Don't do that, don't do that.

Linzi:

This has taken a turn.

Mark:

This has taken a turn, but this has taken a turn, inevitably going to take a turn when we're talking about these. Are they? These ones have become incredibly popular.

Linzi:

Yet if you more power to you, I'm a plus person you'd be fine. I'm not. I'm just not.

Mark:

I think there's more of the themed cruises that I would be okay. You can't go on the nude one you're not bothered about doing getting oiled up for wrestling. I feel I'm better suited for themed cruises.

Linzi:

I think you might be, apart from the themed cruise that I want to go on, but Well, we'll talk about that soon. Even the cooking cruise I'd be rubbish at.

Mark:

You would. Yeah, I'm so rubbish. Well, we'll get on to one of our dream. Cruises are getting incredibly popular and you're seeing them on the Atlantis. Alternative lifestyle, that's what they refer to them. As that's not my wording, I'm looking at that in my notes on the screen.

Linzi:

It's zoomed in on you. It's all about you.

Mark:

Moving, moving. It's all about you. I don't know why the camera's done that.

Linzi:

Because it's all about you and the cruises you go on. It's not the cruises I go on.

Mark:

It's moved me off of it.

Linzi:

Yeah, yeah.

Mark:

I will just. This doesn't affect anyone watching it. Who's listening?

Anyone watching who's?

Mark:

Just before we got on Virgin last august it was atlantis it was the atlantis cruise for two week they had a long cruise yeah, and whilst you talk about cleaning, um, with a bit of a joke, it was when they got.
